What Makes Air Condition Systems Smell?
Have you ever turned on your air condition in the middle of a hot summer day, intending to combat the warm air outside, and out blows smelly air? If so, you are not the only person in this predicament. So, what is the cause of this odor?

Condensation from the system forms on various parts, such as the tubes and fins, and then settles in the pan. Then air is introduced through the inlet that contains contaminants like dirt and various types of debris which also collects in the pan and fins. The warm, moist air within the air condition’s housing becomes the ideal breeding ground for molds, mildew and other bacteria. These then turn to gas and cause a nasty odor. Add the circulation air when you turn on your air conditioner, and you now have smelly air floating through your vehicle.
What can be done about this problem? Cool Profit$ Magazine offers the following steps you can take:
- Apply a microbial and moisture-resistant coating to the coil to reduce the problem in the first place.
- Clean the evaporator.
- Use an electronic timer to cycle the blower at certain intervals after the vehicle has been shut down.
