We have all seen them. It’s that light in our car the pops on out of seemingly out of nowhere. The full name
used by Mechanics in the body shop is “Check Engine Light Malfunction Indicator” or more commonly called the check engine light.
This check engine light always has a meaning. Even if the meaning is something simple and not really harmful, there is always a basis for the indication. Why? The computer doesn’t guess or have the ability to reason. It can only think in binary (Yes or No) terms.
Older cars are much harder to diagnose check engine light related problems. The car companies developed hard to understand blinking lights or other similar techniques. Even though it seems very “old school” today, at least it was a step in the right direction.
Today diagnosing these type of problems is a simple as hooking up a scanner, whether it be hand held or PC based, to the on-board diagnostic system on your vehicle.
If you would like to set your mind at ease every time a check engine light shows up on your dash, you might want to look at getting a diagnostic scanner for your garage. You can purchase the same scanners the pros use at Mechanics Tool Supply.
