Onboard diagnostics first swept into the automotive industry in the early 1980s.  Since then, onboard diagnostic systems have progressively made their way from luxury automobiles, to passenger sedans, to nearly every automobile on the road.  In the past, most obd scanners and analyzers allowed for only a quick glimpse into the overall condition of a car or truck’s condition, usually through a quick plug-and-play procedure.

Over time, however onboard diagnostic equipment has expanded along with the technology that supports its function.  It is now possible to record diagnostic data for multiple cars  and to save the information for later use or while working on the vehicle. This ability gives mechanics new flexibility when using onboard diagnostic systems to analyze and interpret vehicle data.

The Ferret Instruments Five-Gas Analyzer is one example of an onboard diagnostic tool with the ability to record data.  It can manage up to three hours of stored information on any typical vehicle.  It also allows for connection of the analyzer to a 12-volt battery, giving you extra convenience and mobility.  When you store data on a car, you give yourself the flexibility to diagnose multiple problems and the usability of an innovative onboard diagnostic tool.

In yesterday’s post, we talked about the benefits of using a code reader to read diagnostic codes that are registered when a fault is noticed.  As was also stated yesterday, code readers have their limitations in the amount of knowledge they can offer the user.  When more of a thorough onboard diagnostic tool is needed, a scan tool comes in extremely handy. 

Unlike code readers, scan tools have the ability to read sensor data and operating information.  Like code readers, there are both generic scan tools and professional level.  Generic scan tools not only do all that code readers do, but they also show system monitors, air flow, coolant temperature, and many other various readings. 

Professional level scan tools, on the other hand, do all that a generic can do and more.  They can display Performance Information Data (PID), and, given adequate software is installed, can perform most OEM self-tests.  When the more high-tech scan tools are used that show graphs, more information can be gathered due to the visual the graph provides.
